First Aid Information

In its most basic form, first aid is considered to be the medical attention given to a person to help stabilize their condition until professional help can be obtained. Usually when people mention first aid, their first thought is on stopping bleeding from a skin breaking wound. But the basic procedures in first aid go beyond restricting blood loss.

There is the need to treat the victim for shock as well. Bites from spiders, snakes and scorpion and wasp stings also are part of basic first aid procedures. There is a great deal of information available about first aid basics. There are online study guides and more advanced courses of study. Some of the basic first aid guides can be obtained for free, while others as well as the advanced manuals will cost some money. These, however, sometimes include the cost of certification to guarantee thorough knowledge of the basic first aid guidelines and procedures you have learned from the information manuals. One good way to help yourself understand the basics of first aid is to help teach basic first aid to children. A quick search online will reveal many information sites for helping to teach the basics.

There are a few basic differences in first aid treatments and procedures when you are travelling in the wilderness. Some of the procedures must be more advanced as you are going to be a much greater distance from any professional medical help. Therefore, wilderness first aid must encompass not only the simple patching of a cut, but also the ways of treating shock, immobilizing broken limbs, and ways to assemble a litter for carrying the victim out. An advanced degree of preparedness will be needed so that you will be able to stock a basic first aid kit of medicines and ointments to ease the suffering from insect attacks, snake bites, poison plant allergies and possible food and water contamination illnesses.

Basic first aid information is usually a requisite of most business managers. There is an entire support industry of companies that train and certify employers in the basic first aid procedures in case of accident or injury to employees or customers. The American Red Cross is an excellent source of first aid information and guides. Their cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification program is one of the best in the world. Even if you are not going into management or a line of work that requires knowledge of first aid, it is still a very good thing to know. After all, the first life you save with it may be one of your loved one's.
